When interior designer, Jane Ko (@atasteofkoko) and her husband, real estate developer Josh Campbell, of Howdy Homes, set out to build their forever home in Austin, Texas, they envisioned a space that balanced refined aesthetics with thoughtful functionality and was designed around the way they live.
To accomplish this, they enlisted the services of Steven Weinstein of Simple AV, a custom integration firm. Simple AV focuses on creating exceptional experiences for luxury homes using audio, video, shading, lighting, and controls. Steven takes pride in blending technology with lifestyle, helping clients elevate their homes with tailored solutions.
Utilizing WAC Group’s AiSPIRE smart lighting solutions, they moved beyond standard builder-grade lighting and implemented a sophisticated, human-centric lighting system that enhanced every aspect of their home life.
The ChallengesJane and Josh faced several common challenges encountered by homeowners embarking on new builds or major renovations.
Understanding the Possibilities of Light
Initially, Jane and Josh, like many, were unfamiliar with the role of a professional integrator or the full potential of professional lighting design beyond basic illumination. They understood the need for lights but not the nuanced impact of different color temperatures, scenes, or control systems.
Integrating Lifestyle with Technology
The primary challenge was to create a lighting system that seamlessly blended with their daily routines, from early mornings in the gym or office to relaxing evenings and entertaining guests. This required more than just placing fixtures; it demanded an understanding of how each space would be used at different times.
Avoiding "Builder-Grade" Pitfalls
A common concern, highlighted by Steven, is that standard, often harsh, lighting can detract from high-end finishes and overall home enjoyment. The challenge was to ensure the lighting enhanced the investment in countertops, flooring, and architectural details rather than diminishing them through “bad lighting” or glare.
Future-Proofing and Value
As their “forever home,” the lighting needed to be adaptable, high-quality, and add long-term value, considering factors like aging in place and the impact of light on well-being.
The SolutionSteven, in collaboration with the AiSPIRE team, implemented a comprehensive lighting solution that addressed these challenges.
Client Education and Collaboration
The process began with an immersive educational experience at Steven’s studio. This “aha!” moment allowed Jane and Josh to understand the possibilities, from dimming capabilities and voice commands to the impact of different light qualities. “He showed us all the possibilities of lighting… and I was very overwhelmed but also very impressed,” Jane noted.
Lifestyle-Centric Design
Steven worked closely with Jane and Josh to understand their daily habits and preferences. This led to:
Circadian Rhythm Lighting: AiSPIRE’s Atmosphere product was implemented in key areas, such as the gym and office, automatically adjusting light intensity and color temperature to match the time of day, promoting well-being and productivity.
Custom Scene Creation: Tailored lighting scenes using AiSPIRE’s Aurora color-changing fixtures were programmed for various activities: an “intense” workout mode, a “romantic date night” ambiance in the kitchen (dimmed to 1800 Kelvin), and welcoming scenes for entertaining in the outdoor kitchen and pool area.
Easy Control: A Control4 system was integrated, providing intuitive control via minimized keypads rather than banks of confusing switches. “It’s all seamless,” Jane remarked.

Pre-Construction Integration and High-Quality Products
The key to success was early involvement. Jane recognized that “lighting is actually really important even to start looking at before you even break construction.” This allowed for optimal placement and wiring. High-quality AiSPIRE products, including dim-to-warm Astro fixtures and recessed lights for a clean aesthetic, were selected to ensure both performance and visual appeal.
Focus on Experience, Not Just Fixtures
The entire philosophy was to “sell the dream,” as Steven Weinstein put it. Instead of just talking about lumens and Kelvin, the focus was on how the lighting would make them feel – more relaxed, more energized, or more comfortable. Patrick Laidlaw, Director of Business Development for AiSPIRE, reinforced this: “You love the way the space feels.”
Conclusion: A Brighter Future by Design
The Austin “forever home” project masterfully demonstrates how thoughtful lighting integration, driven by client lifestyle and expert knowledge, can elevate a house into a truly personalized and enriching environment. By moving beyond the commoditized approach to lighting and embracing sophisticated solutions from AiSPIRE, guided by an experienced integrator like Steven Weinstein, Jane and Josh achieved a space that is both beautiful and intelligently responsive to their needs. This project underscores the significant value an integrator brings – not just in installing technology but in educating clients, designing for life, and ultimately enhancing well-being and the overall enjoyment of a home. The result is a testament to how “good lighting,” as Raymond Altmann, Business Development Manager for AiSPIRE, stated, can truly transform a living experience.
