Smart Ceiling Fan Trends to Watch

Over the past few years, smart ceiling fans have played a pivotal role in enhancing functionality and aesthetics of homes and businesses. Not only do today’s fans quietly and effortlessly cool an area, but they have also evolved into stylish statement pieces that can be controlled by your client’s existing keypads.

If you are a Custom Integrator, Modern Forms Smart Fans can be a welcome addition to your lighting portfolio. Our latest Smart Fan collections prove that point as they celebrate creativity, individuality and a harmonious blend of form and function.

Smart Technology Integration Trends

As technology advances, so do the trends in function and features. One of the most significant trends is the integration of smart home technology. Home automation has become increasingly popular, and Modern Forms has responded by creating fans that can be controlled through these systems.

“The clients in our space are looking for the fans to work with their whole-home automation platforms. They want the custom integrator to set them up for them so they just push “scene” buttons on a keypad, to make things happen,” says Patrick Laidlaw, AiSPIRE Director of Business Development.  “The ABiCUS Gateway from AiSPIRE makes controlling Modern Forms fans easy.”

ABiCUS by AiSPIRE adds wireless Gateway IP communication to its wired DMX protocol, connecting Modern Forms ceiling fans to a broad spectrum of automation platforms via the home’s wireless IT network. The ceiling fans have receivers that are built into the motor, so they can be addressed via WiFi, Bluetooth or other specific controls that the fan’s receiver can interpret. In a Gateway IP setup, these receivers would interface with the existing automation platform, allowing for:

  •  Remote Control: Users can control fan speed and lighting through button presses on their control system keypad, or through Wi-Fi or Bluetooth-enabled devices.
  •  Automation and Synchronization: Automate fan and light settings based on programmed scenes or schedules,  and synchronize them with other smart home devices.
  •  Enhanced Integration: Combining control with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth offers a more comprehensive and integrated smart home or automation system, opening control to additional platforms, such as Amazon Alexa and Google Home/Assistant, Samsung Smart Things and Ecobee Smart Thermostats.

Ceiling Fan Innovations for Form and Function

Innovations in ceiling fans are transforming both their functionality and aesthetic appeal, making them smarter, more efficient and more stylish. Here are the innovations that are revolutionizing how we think about and use ceiling fans.

  • Sustainable Design: sustainability is a key consideration in modern home design. Manufacturers respond to the demand for energy-efficient appliances by developing fans with DC motors, LED lighting and advanced controls. These features reduce energy consumption and contribute to lower electric bills.
  • Efficient, Quiet DC Motors: over the last decade, DC motors have become more popular for operating smart fans versus AC motors. They are much quieter, more efficient, produce more torque, and water resistant. Aerodynamically designed blades contribute to a peaceful and undisturbed environment, making these fans suitable for bedrooms, living rooms and other areas where quiet operation is essential.
  • Integrated LED Illumination: LED light sources are integrated into a ceiling fan’s housing design, eliminating the need for a traditional globe or shade-style downlight and streamlining its appearance. LED components’ compact and often hidden nature allows for more contemporary designs with slim profiles, minimalist lines and innovative lighting configurations, making them not only functional but also stylish additions to modern interiors.
  • Color Temperature Selectable: LED light sources with selectable CCT offer illumination levels from warm, ambient lighting for cozy evenings to cool, bright lighting for focused tasks. They are dimmable so that the brightness can be adjusted according to user preferences and the room’s mood, or they can be a single color temperature: typically 3000 Kelvin, for even, dimmable illumination.
  • Reversible Motor Technology: ceiling fans with reversible motor technology are gaining in popularity. With this feature, users can change the fan’s direction seasonally, promoting energy efficiency. During the summer, the fan can be set to create a cooling breeze, while in the winter it can be reversed to circulate warm air, that collects near the ceiling, throughout the space.

Luxury is in the details! From elegant shapes to naturally organic materials and fabulous finishes, here are trends that make the design difference.

  • Sculptural Elegance: ceiling fans are no longer confined to traditional designs. The latest trend sees manufacturers embracing sculptural elegance, crafting fans that resemble works of art. Intricate and eye-catching blade designs, coupled with unique motor housings, turn these fans into focal points of a room while adding a touch of sophistication. The advent of ABS, a polycarbonate material that’s all-weather, lightweight and easily molded into various shapes, offers greater freedom in fan blade design.
  • Metallic Finishes: housing and blades constructed from steel (for indoor and damp-rated fans) or corrosion-resistant aluminum (for wet-rated fans) are ideal for metallic finishes, making a bold statement in contemporary ceiling fan design. Brushed nickel, matte black, matte white and soft brass are just a few trending tones. These colors lend a modern and luxurious look and provide versatility, allowing fans to seamlessly integrate with various interior styles.
  • Wood Accents and Natural Materials: a fusion of technology and nature is evident in ceiling fans featuring wooden accents and natural materials. Blades and decorative accents made of real or faux wood bring warmth and organic charm to spaces, creating a connection to the outdoors and making these fans perfect for eco-conscious and nature-inspired interiors.
  • Sleek Profiles: minimalism continues to influence design trends, and ceiling fans are no exception. Fans with sleek profiles, clean lines and elegant aesthetics seamlessly blend into contemporary and modern interiors, enhancing the overall visual appeal without overpowering the space.
